The Monument to the Victims of the Labor Camp in Treblinka is located in the Maliszewski Forest, near the former German Nazi labor camp Treblinka I, which operated from 1941 to 1944. It commemorates nearly 10,000 prisoners who died or were murdered there. The monument was designed by Franciszek Strynkiewicz and takes the form of a "wall of death" made of red sandstone, measuring 12 meters in length, 2.7 meters in height, and 1.6 meters in width. Additional elements, such as symbolic "teardrops," introduce the motif of blood droplets, emphasizing the tragic history of the site. Next to the monument lies a plaque with the inscription "In homage to the murdered" and a mound with a cross, built by children in 1947, which contains the bones of the victims. Surrounding the area are 140 concrete crosses marking mass graves, underscoring the importance of remembering the victims. Patriotic and religious ceremonies are held here annually on the first Saturday of September, with the Stations of the Cross serving as the central event. The history of the Treblinka camp also includes cultural aspects, as the original crime sites were destroyed by "grave robbers" searching for valuables. The monument and mausoleum have become symbols of remembrance, although the original design of the mausoleum was never fully realized. While the architectural appeal of the site is subdued, it holds a wealth of emotions and history worth preserving. In 2014, an additional monument dedicated to the murdered Roma and Sinti was unveiled, reflecting the ongoing effort to remember the diverse victims of the Holocaust. The monument in Treblinka and its surroundings reflect a difficult history, local commitment to commemorating the victims, and the continuous need for dialogue with the past.
