wikipedia
The Museum of the History of Industry in Opatówek (MHPO) is an institution documenting the history of the Kalisz-Mazovian industrial district, established on January 1, 1981, and opened to the public in 1991. The museum is housed in the historic Adolf Fiedler factory, built between 1824 and 1826, which is the only preserved industrial complex from the first half of the 19th century in Europe. The facility retains all phases of production, offering insight into the architectural solutions of the industry at that time. The building features five-story wooden factory halls, a cast-iron staircase, and classical wall finishes. The museum holds 12,000 exhibits, including steam engines, looms, printing, spinning, and sewing machines, which illustrate the development of European industry, particularly textiles, metal, and chemicals. A unique part of the collection is the largest assemblage of Polish pianos and grand pianos, comprising over 60 instruments produced between 1820 and 1939 in various centers. Other interesting exhibits include jacquard designs, collections of lace, embroidery, and paraments, such as the chasuble and stole of Pope John Paul II. The museum also boasts a rich library of literature related to technology and engineering. From 1992 to 2003, the chairman of the Museum Council was Prof. Janusz Szosland, and the institution won a first-degree award in a nationwide competition organized by the Ministry of Culture and Art for its innovative exhibitions. MHPO not only documents the history of industry but also serves as an important center for culture and education, attracting enthusiasts of technology and history.
