wikipedia
The Capitol Musical Theatre in Wrocław was established on the site of the pre-war Capitol cinema-theatre, built in 1929. Designed by Berlin architect Friedrich Lippa, the building is considered one of the most beautiful structures in Central Europe, distinguished by its modernist style and expressionist elements. During World War II, the building suffered damage, but after the war in 1946, it became the home of "Śląsk" cinema, which was the largest in Poland at the time. In 1955, the Lower Silesian Operetta began its activities in the building, marking the start of a new cultural chapter for the venue. In 2011, as part of an expansion, the theatre was quadrupled in size, and its historic interiors were restored thanks to the work of architect Anna Morasiewicz and the KKM Kozień Architekci studio, who received the prestigious Project of the Year 2005 award for their efforts. The Capitol Musical Theatre took on a modern character, and its official reopening with a new premiere took place on September 28, 2013, with the performance of "The Master and Margarita." The institution's history has been marked by changes in name and artistic direction; in 2004, the historic name "Capitol Musical Theatre" was restored. Among the directors who have led the theatre, Wojciech Kościelniak deserves special mention for reforming the repertoire into a modern musical theatre, as does Konrad Imiela, who held both key positions from 2006 to 2021. The Capitol Musical Theatre has collaborated with outstanding artists, including Leszek Możdżer and Kinga Preis. The theatre not only continues the traditions of its predecessor institutions but is also the producer of the Review of Actors' Song. Its repertoire includes both classics of musical theatre and innovative productions such as "Frankenstein" and "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." The Capitol Musical Theatre is not only a key point on Wrocław's cultural map but also a rediscovery of the city's theatrical history and traditions, combining dynamism and modernity in its offerings.
