wikipedia
Nidzica, formerly known as Nibork, is a town in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, situated on the Nida River. It has a population of approximately 13,872 (as of January 1, 2018). The town serves as the seat of Nidzica County and the urban-rural municipality of Nidzica. It was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century and was initially known as Neidenburg, meaning "stronghold on the Nida River." Throughout its history, Nidzica has experienced numerous upheavals, particularly during the Polish-Teutonic Wars and the subsequent division of the territory between Poland and Prussia. The town's landmarks include a 14th-century Gothic Teutonic castle, which was rebuilt after being damaged during World War II and now houses the Museum of the Nidzica Land. Other historical sites include the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Adalbert, a 19th-century town hall, and remnants of defensive walls. Nidzica's culture is deeply rooted in Masurian traditions and the activities of local communities, which have shaped its development over the centuries. In the past, the town was known for its alcohol production and brewing industry. Today, it offers a variety of cultural and sporting events, with the sports club Start Nidzica boasting a rich history in multiple disciplines. The town also has its own local media, such as "Głos Nidzicki" and "Nasza Gazeta Nidzicka." It possesses a rich religious heritage, with various communities including Catholic, Evangelical-Augsburg, and Protestant groups. Nidzica engages in partnerships with towns like Buzançais in France, Klaipėda in Lithuania, and Sarny in Ukraine. An interesting fact is that Nidzica became a border town after the 1920 plebiscite, which intensified its regional significance. It also serves as an important transport hub, with its own railway station, contributing to its ongoing development. Despite challenging periods in its history, Nidzica has managed to rebuild itself and today stands as a place rich in culture and tradition.
