Nowe Miasto Lubawskie is a rural municipality in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, located in the Nowe Miasto County. Between 1975 and 1998, the municipality was part of the Toruń Voivodeship. The municipal seat was relocated from the former town of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie to Mszanowo on January 1, 1996. The municipality covers an area of 138.02 km², of which 69% is agricultural land and 17% is forested. It constitutes 19.86% of the total area of Nowe Miasto County. The municipal authorities include Mayor Tomasz Waruszewski, Secretary Agnieszka Paturalska-Miehlau, and Treasurer Joanna Artuszewska, while the Municipal Council consists of 15 members. In recent years, the municipality has experienced population growth, from 7,740 residents in 2004 to 8,245 in 2019. Culturally, the municipality boasts a rich local heritage and numerous village administrative units, such as Bagno, Bratian, and Mszanowo. An interesting fact is that the municipality includes settlements with the status of a hamlet, such as Kaczek—a forest settlement—highlighting the diversity of its settlement structure. Demographically, the municipality is age-diverse, which also reflects the need to tailor municipal services to the needs of different resident groups. Neighboring municipalities include Biskupiec, Grodziczno, Iława, Kurzętnik, and Lubawa, giving Nowe Miasto Lubawskie a strategic location in the region.
