wikipedia
Nowe Skalmierzyce, a town in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, is located on the Kalisz Upland, bordering Kalisz and Skalmierzyce, with a population of 4,661 residents (as of 2023). The town's history dates back to 1908 when, after being separated from the village of Skalmierzyce, it received the German name Neu Skalmirschütz. A key moment in the development of the town was the construction of a railway line from Ostrów Wielkopolski in 1896, which fostered economic growth. The town was also the site of a meeting between Emperors Wilhelm II and Nicholas II at the monumental neo-Gothic railway station built between 1905 and 1906, which remains intact to this day. The history of Nowe Skalmierzyce was also marked by the difficult times of World War II, when the town was occupied by the Germans, and a transit camp for the Polish population was established in the local school. In 1962, the town gained city rights and changed its name to Nowe Skalmierzyce. Local traditions are also noteworthy, such as the annual "Town Days" celebrations, which began in 1993. The town features numerous historical monuments, including the neo-Gothic customs office building and the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Nowe Skalmierzyce is also an industrial center and part of the Łódź Special Economic Zone, supporting local economic development. Residents benefit from rail and road transport, and the town is well-connected to the region's largest urban areas. In 2016, 67 Himalayan birches were planted in the town, reflecting a commitment to environmental care. Nowe Skalmierzyce also has international ties, as it has been a partner city of Căușeni since 2014.
