Olecko is an urban-rural municipality located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, within Olecko County, with its administrative seat in the town of Olecko. Between 1975 and 1998, the municipality belonged to the Suwałki Voivodeship. According to demographic data, in 2009 the municipality had a population of 21,439, which increased to 22,025 by 2019. The municipality covers an area of 266.6 km², of which 69% is agricultural land and 16% is forested. Olecko, occupying 30.51% of the county's area, features both flat terrain and numerous forested areas, creating favorable conditions for agriculture and tourism. The municipality comprises many village administrative units, including Babki Oleckie, Dąbrowskie, Kukowo, and Zatyki, as well as smaller settlements such as Giże, Olecko-Kolonia, and Wólka Kijewska. The region boasts rich cultural and historical values, reflecting a diversity shaped by its past, including Prussian and Lithuanian influences. The town center of Olecko has preserved interwar architectural elements, which attract tourists and history enthusiasts.
