wikipedia
Olsztyn-Mazury Airport, located in Szymany, is a key element of the transport infrastructure in the Warmian-Masurian region, with the IATA code SZY and ICAO code EPSY. Situated 10 km from Szczytno and 56 km from Olsztyn, it is the only airport in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, covering an area of approximately 322 hectares. Its name was officially adopted in 2015, and its logo was designed by Mateusz Obarek from Studio Gravite. The history of the airport dates back to the 1920s, when it began operations in the Dajtki area, serving both military and civilian passenger flights. After World War II, the airport in Szymany was used by the Polish military aviation. Between 1996 and 2003, it served civilian purposes, but its operations resumed after expansion in 2016. Significant investments in infrastructure, such as the modernization of the terminal and improvements to the runway surface, enabled the launch of regular connections, including for Ryanair and Wizz Air. Interestingly, the airport gained international notoriety due to its association with secret CIA flights, where prisoners were transported for torture at a nearby facility. Olsztyn-Mazury Airport also features a railway stop and regular bus connections, facilitating access to the airport. It is worth noting the dynamic development of the airport, which has obtained certifications enabling cargo operations and the expansion of hangars for small and medium-sized aircraft. The airport aims to become a key transportation hub in the region, with rail and bus infrastructure coordinated with departures and arrivals, ensuring convenient access for passengers.
