W skrócie

wikipedia
Ostrów Tumski in Poznań is the only remaining island on the Warta River within the city's administrative boundaries, surrounded by the main stream of the Warta and a narrower branch called the Cybina. Historically, the early Middle Ages were characterized by numerous islands within what is now Poznań, and Ostrów Tumski was a key defensive center, which contributed to the establishment of a stronghold there. Between the 7th and 9th centuries, people began to settle here, and in the 10th century, an important Piast stronghold was established. The culture in this area also developed under the influence of the church, particularly during the reign of Mieszko I, when the first Christian temple in Poland was built. In later centuries, Ostrów Tumski, owned by the bishops of Poznań, played a significant role in church administration. The activities of Bishop Jan Lubrański in the 15th and 16th centuries led to the development of educational craftsmanship and the establishment of the Lubrański Academy, the first higher education institution in Poznań, as well as the construction of necessary infrastructure, including defensive walls. From then on, Ostrów Tumski became a center of culture and science. Over the centuries, the place underwent various changes—both architectural and urban. After World War II, Ostrów Tumski was rebuilt, but changes in the river system and new transportation routes made the island more isolated. Currently, revitalization of this historic space is underway, leading to its integration with the rest of Poznań. Among the monuments are the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, known for its early Romanesque and Gothic elements, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Archbishop's Palace. The Interactive Center of the History of Ostrów Tumski, opened in 2014, aims to provide cultural education and promote the history of this important part of Poznań. An interesting fact is the relics of defensive ramparts from the time of Mieszko I, discovered during archaeological excavations, which showcase the rich history of this place and its key significance in Polish history. Ostrów Tumski, with its fascinating past, continues to attract the attention of residents and tourists, becoming a place that connects history with modernity.
