wikipedia
Otłoczyn is a sołectwo (administrative village unit) in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, within the Aleksandrów Kujawski commune, with a rich historical past dating back to the 10th century. The village is situated on the Vistula River, near its left-bank tributary, the Tążyna River. The architecture of Otłoczyn is distinguished by two churches: an Evangelical church converted into a Catholic parish church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built in 1905, and wooden chapels from the 18th century. Otłoczyn was a strategic location due to its crossing over the Vistula, which attracted settlers, including Mennonites who arrived in the 17th century, introducing innovative farming and construction methods. The history of Otłoczyn is linked to many significant events, such as the crossing of Polish troops during the wars with the Teutonic Knights, and the first written mention dates back to 1015. During the Second Polish Republic, Otłoczyn became a health resort town, but the development plans for the resort were interrupted by World War II, when German occupiers were active in the area. In 1980, a railway disaster occurred here, resulting in 67 fatalities. After the war, Otłoczyn declined in importance but remains a place with a fascinating history. Its natural climatic advantages and proximity to the Vistula River make Otłoczyn an attractive recreational destination, with a network of hiking and cycling trails. The contemporary culture of the village is expressed through the activities of the Society of Friends of the Ciechocinek Lowland and events organized by the local women's rural association. An interesting fact is that Otłoczyn also has numerous archaeological sites, evidence of settlement dating back to prehistoric times.
