wikipedia
Podgórna Waterfall, located in the Polish part of the Karkonosze Mountains, is the third highest waterfall in the region, featuring an impressive 10-meter rock ledge from which the waters of the Podgórna Stream cascade in two stages into a plunge pool. Surrounded by granite cliffs reaching up to 15 meters in height, the waterfall is one of the key tourist attractions in the Przesieka area, drawing numerous visitors, including winter swimming enthusiasts. In the past, an inn existed near the waterfall, but it no longer operates today. The area surrounding the waterfall is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its natural value. The waterfall is accessible via a black hiking trail leading from Przesieka to Sosnówka, making it a popular destination for walkers. In 2007, a controversial project emerged to build a small hydroelectric power plant, which proposed reducing the waterfall’s flow by 70% through the construction of a rubble dam. Although the project initially received approval from authorities, it was ultimately halted due to opposition from local communities and a resolution by the Podgórzyn municipality regarding land use. The decision by the Jelenia Góra district authorities was eventually revoked, putting an end to the planned construction and protecting the waterfall from the negative impacts of human intervention on its natural beauty. Podgórna Waterfall is not only a tourist attraction but also enriches the cultural and historical heritage of the region, forming part of the rich recreational offerings of the Karkonosze Mountains.
