wikipedia
POLREGIO, formerly known as Przewozy Regionalne, is the largest passenger railway company in Poland. It was established in 2001 as a spin-off of the Passenger Transport Sector of PKP (Polish State Railways) and has since undergone numerous transformations to adapt to changing market conditions. In 2015, facing the threat of bankruptcy, the majority of its shares were acquired by the Industrial Development Agency, which enabled the implementation of restructuring programs and a fleet renewal initiative. POLREGIO primarily operates under contracts with regional authorities (marshal offices), running passenger trains, including local, accelerated (Regio), as well as Interregio and superREGIO services. Every day, around 1,900 trains are dispatched, carrying approximately 270,000 passengers. Over the years, the company's market share has grown to over 26%, making it a key player in the Polish railway transport market. It is also worth noting that the company has introduced a new consumer brand, modernized its ticket sales system with online and mobile app solutions, attracting new passengers. Interestingly, despite financial difficulties, POLREGIO recorded a positive financial result for the first time in its history in 2016. Future plans include further modernization of the rolling stock and the development of innovative services, aimed at attracting even more passengers and strengthening its market position.
