wikipedia
Bemowo is a district of Warsaw, located on the left bank of the city, and is one of the 18 auxiliary units of the capital. The name "Bemowo" was introduced after World War II and refers to Fort Bema, which in turn was named in commemoration of Józef Bem. In 1987, the name "Boernerowo" was restored for the historic part of the district. Bemowo borders the Warsaw West County and the districts of Bielany, Żoliborz, Wola, Włochy, and Ursus. In administrative divisions, Bemowo includes areas such as Lotnisko, Fort Radiowo, Boernerowo, and Groty. The district features important sites like the Public Library, a metro station, parks, and military facilities such as the Military University of Technology and various forts that are part of Warsaw's former fortifications. These forts, built in the 19th century by Tsarist Russia, are not only historical but also architectural gems, with three of them listed as heritage monuments. Bemowo is involved in Poland's military life, hosting Babice Airport, numerous military units, and research institutes. It is worth mentioning that the historic fortress areas were used as military bases during World War II and the Polish People's Republic. Today, Bemowo benefits from diverse cultural resources, and its architecture blends historic and modern elements. The district cooperates with partner cities such as Óbuda in Hungary and Solna in Sweden, highlighting its significance on the international map.
