Poraj, located in the Silesian Voivodeship, within the Myszków County, is a rural municipality with a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Originally part of the Choroń commune, established in 1867, the Poraj municipality was carved out by German authorities in 1915 and became an independent administrative unit. After World War I, the First Southern communes were merged again, and in 1925, Choroń was transformed into the Poraj municipality. The commune underwent various administrative changes, experiencing, among others, the reform of gromadas (village clusters) in 1954 and the eventual restoration of its municipal status in 1973. The character of the municipality is shaped by forested areas, agricultural land, and water reservoirs, including the Poraj Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the Częstochowa region, which attracts tourists and offers a rich recreational infrastructure.
