wikipedia
Samotnia is one of the oldest mountain shelters in Poland, located by Mały Staw in the Karkonosze Mountains. It currently offers 49 overnight accommodations, a buffet, a tourist information point, and a climbing wall. Its history dates back to the second half of the 17th century, when the area began to attract settlers. The first records of a cottage by the lake come from 1670, when a guard lived there to watch over the trout. Over time, Samotnia became a destination for hikers, including well-known figures like Christian Gryfius. In 1866, with the construction of railway lines to Wrocław and Berlin, tourism began to flourish. Shelter owners recognized the need for expansion, leading to architectural changes; the current buffet hall is over 100 years old. In 1891, the shelter came under the ownership of Henryk Richter, who continued its modernization and installed a distinctive bell from Jelenia Góra. After World War II, the facility was managed by several owners until 1966, when Waldemar Siemaszko took over and contributed to its prosperity. Tragically, he passed away in 1994, and his wife Sylwia assumed management. Under their leadership, the shelter gained renown, winning numerous awards and introducing innovations such as a biological wastewater treatment plant. Various sporting events were also organized, including the "Samotnia Cup" ski competitions. Samotnia attracts visitors not only with its rich history but also with internet access—a rarity in the mountains. As a hub for gatherings and a symbol of skiing and hiking traditions, the shelter remains vibrant and continues to be a key landmark in the Karkonosze.
