wikipedia
The PTTK Shelter "Pod Łabskim Szczytem", formerly known as Alte Schlesische Baude, is one of the oldest mountain lodges in the Karkonosze range. Its origins date back to the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), when it was established as a shepherd’s hut, offering refuge to travelers and protecting the Czech Trail during epidemics. Over the years, with the growing interest in tourism, the building evolved from simple shepherd shelters into a modern mountain lodge. The oldest known drawing of the structure comes from 1780, and its original names referred to its owners. Throughout the 19th century, the shelter passed from the Hallmann family to the Erlebach family, and in 1888, a veranda was added, raising its standards. Architecturally, the building was characterized by a log structure and a gable roof covered with wooden shingles, typical of Sudeten architecture. In the 20th century, the shelter underwent a series of modernizations, including the installation of telephones and a water supply system. After a fire in 1915, the building was reconstructed and, in the following years, introduced innovations such as electricity. After World War II, the shelter was taken over by PTTK, and by 1966, it could accommodate 70 tourists. In 2009 and 2011, it ranked highly in mountain shelter ratings, reflecting its popularity and reputable offerings. Today, the shelter is located at an altitude of 1,168 meters above sea level in a beautiful area rich in vegetation, including rare alpine plant species. It offers 39 sleeping places and a buffet with a fireplace, and a ski lift is located nearby. Numerous scenic hiking trails pass near the shelter, making it an ideal base for exploring the Karkonosze Mountains.
