Szklarska Poręba

Szklarska Poręba is a picturesque town located in the Karkonosze Mountains, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, which obtained its town rights in 1959. Historically, the town was part of several duchies, and after World War II, it came under Polish administration, which significantly influenced its development. The town is renowned for its glassmaking traditions, dating back to the 14th century, with the "Józefina" and later "Julia" glassworks known worldwide for their production of artistic glass. Architecturally, Szklarska Poręba is characterized by 19th and 20th-century buildings, including beautiful villas and historic churches, such as the neo-Romanesque Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Culturally, the town thrives with various events, including the World Snow Sculpture Championships and festivals related to regional artistic creativity. Szklarska Poręba is also known as the "City of the Mountain Spirit," with the legend of the Mountain Spirit Rübezahl, highlighting the richness of local traditions. From a tourist perspective, the town offers a well-developed accommodation base, over 200 km of cycling trails, and hiking routes, including the Main Sudeten Trail. Nearby attractions include the Karkonosze Environmental Education Center and the Mineralogical Museum. Szklarska Poręba is also known for the "Zakręt Śmierci" (Death Turn), a dangerous spot on the road that has witnessed many accidents. The region is popular for cross-country and downhill skiing, and hosts sporting events such as the Bieg Piastów, considered one of the best cross-country skiing trails in Europe. The town is also home to numerous religious communities, including Roman Catholic parishes and a Jehovah's Witness congregation.
