wikipedia
Pułtusk Castle is a Renaissance residence situated on a hill overlooking the Narew River, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Located near a former river crossing, it likely served as a stronghold guarding this important route. In 1313, the area came under the ownership of the bishops of Płock, who ruled the castle as the princes of Pułtusk for the next six centuries. In the 13th century, the stronghold featured wooden structures, and the subsequent settlement was granted town rights in 1339, developing despite numerous Lithuanian invasions that devastated both the town and the castle. By the 14th century, the castle had become the residence of the bishops, who, committed to the development of humanism, transformed its wooden structure into a brick complex. Renaissance renovations took place in the 16th century when renowned artists were brought to the castle. Architecturally, the castle consisted of two main buildings: the Small House and the Large House. Over the centuries, numerous modifications were made, including the construction of an arcaded bridge and gardens. The castle suffered damage during the Swedish Deluge and the Napoleonic Wars, with its reconstruction primarily taking place in the early 18th century under the direction of the Załuski family bishops. In the 19th century, the castle lost its status as a bishop's residence and served various functions over the years, including as a military hospital. After World War II, the castle was rebuilt and in the 1970s transformed into the Dom Polonii (House of Polonia), with its interior adapted to meet hotel needs. Today, the castle operates as a hotel and recreational complex, as well as the Center for Documentation of Polish Emigration, blending the past with modern functions. An interesting fact is that Napoleon I visited the castle multiple times, and its interiors were used as observation points during the Battle of Pułtusk in 1806. Thus, Pułtusk Castle is not only a witness to turbulent history but also a cultural site that integrates diverse aspects of Polish heritage.
