Puńsk is a rural municipality located in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, within the Sejny County, with its administrative seat in the town of Puńsk. Between 1975 and 1998, the municipality belonged to the Suwałki Voivodeship. As of the end of June 2008, the municipality had a population of 4,365. Since 2006, the Lithuanian language has been recognized there as an auxiliary language, and in 2008, 30 bilingual geographical names were introduced. The municipality is characterized by a high percentage of residents identifying with Lithuanian nationality, as confirmed by the national censuses of 2002 and 2011, where 74.9% and 75.7% respectively declared Lithuanian nationality. Puńsk covers an area of 138.37 km², of which 79% is agricultural land and 11% is forested. Within its territory lies the Bobruczek Nature Reserve, highlighting the richness of local flora and fauna. The municipality of Puńsk consists of numerous village administrative units, such as Buksze-Osada, Giłujsze, Kalinowo, and Puńsk. The traditions and culture of Lithuania are deeply rooted among the inhabitants, evident both in the language used and the customs practiced. A significant number of Poles also reside in the municipality, creating a unique cultural melting pot. Furthermore, bilingual road signs have been installed in the area, reflecting efforts to preserve cultural heritage and integrate different ethnic groups. The municipality borders Lithuania and other municipalities such as Krasnopol, Sejny, and Szypliszki. The high percentage of residents with Lithuanian roots and its regional significance make Puńsk a fascinating place with a rich history and unique culture, attracting both tourists and researchers.
