Grabie (powiat wielicki)

W skrócie

wikipedia
Grabie is a village in Poland, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, primarily known for its valuable wooden church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the 1740s. The parish, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages, was relocated from Wola Rusiecka, and the church was consecrated in 1747. It houses precious elements, including a Gothic baptismal font and the miraculous image of Our Lady of Grabie. Due to its proximity to the Vistula River, Grabie has frequently suffered from floods, which have significantly impacted the village community, historically composed mainly of poor peasants and fishermen. The history of Grabie dates back to at least 1405, when King Władysław Jagiełło granted the village Magdeburg rights. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Grabie was owned by the Badeni family. The village witnessed numerous historical events, including the invasion of Napoleonic troops and a cholera epidemic during the Spring of Nations. World War II brought many tragedies, including murders and the deportation of residents for forced labor. Despite these hardships, Grabie preserved its cultural identity, and after the war, a people's school and an industrial plant were established, altering the occupational structure of the community. Today, the village is home to the Fatima Center and a Town for the Disabled. Notable figures associated with Grabie include Maciej Szarek, a folk poet, and Jan Sendorek, an officer in Piłsudski's Legions. The church and its surroundings are listed in the register of historical monuments, and the village continues to develop, blending tradition with modernity.
