Wieliczka

Wieliczka is an urban-rural municipality located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in Wieliczka County, covering an area of 100.1 km². The municipality consists of the town of Wieliczka and 29 villages, with its seat serving as the administrative center for both the municipality and the county. As of the end of 2020, the municipality had a population of 58,687, with the majority of residents working in nearby Kraków. From a demographic and architectural perspective, it stands out for its rich collection of historical monuments. In terms of architecture, notable sites include the Żupny Castle and churches that reflect the region's former wealth, as well as numerous hilltop viewpoints offering picturesque views of the surrounding area. Wieliczka is also known for its unique cultural heritage, including the Regional Chamber in Gorzków and an ostrich farm in the same village. The municipality has a strong equestrian tradition, featuring a horse stud farm and opportunities for recreational horseback riding in Siercza, as well as carriage rentals in Grabówki. Thanks to tourist trails, such as the yellow hiking and cycling route winding through scenic landscapes, both residents and visitors can explore the area's natural beauty, with a wealth of attractions across various villages like Lednica Górna and Dobranowice. Wieliczka also boasts deep historical roots. Interestingly, in Siercza, a building associated with the Lubomirski family from the 16th century, surrounded by a historic park, adds to the region's tourist appeal. The municipality collaborates with partner cities, such as Litovel in the Czech Republic and Bergkamen in Germany, fostering cultural exchange. Religion plays a significant role in the community, with 17 Catholic parishes and several religious congregations influencing local traditions and customs. The local job market is also noteworthy, encompassing industrial plants and services, although a significant portion of residents seek employment in Kraków. The average income per capita is 1,546.30 PLN, reflecting the municipality's dynamic development.
