wikipedia
Szczebel, also known as Strzebel, is a peak with an elevation of 977 meters, located in the Beskid Wyspowy mountain range. The history of the mountain's name is rich and complex; described by various authors since the 19th century, it was originally known as Strzebel or Strebl. This name may have referred to the brook trout (strzebla potokowa), although the etymology remains unclear. The current form "Szczebel" results from the local dialect, where the consonant cluster "strz" is replaced with "szcz." Legends are also associated with this mountain, including tales of enchanted treasures supposedly hidden in its crevices, and accounts of ancient gold mines. Architecturally, the summit features a monument dedicated to John Paul II, who visited the site twice, as well as a cross commemorating a deceased priest. Additionally, a rest area with benches and tables has been set up for hikers. Among the interesting facts, it is worth mentioning that near the hiking trail lies Zimna Dziura (Cold Hole) cave, where ice can persist until summer. The peak offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, including Luboń and Babia Góra. The eastern slope of Szczebel is particularly steep, with prominent rock formations. The mountain massif is composed of Magura sandstones and includes four main summits, among them Czechówka and Mały Szczebel. Hiking trails lead to Szczebel from Lubień and Raba Niżna, making it a popular destination for excursions.
