wikipedia
The municipality of Rytro, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, within the Nowy Sącz County, was established on December 30, 1994. It covers an area of 41.92 km², with forest land dominating, accounting for 74% of its territory. Rytro lies in the heart of the Sącz Beskids, encompassing the valleys of the Wielka Roztoka and Poprad rivers, surrounded by the forests of the Radziejowa and Jaworzyna Krynicka ranges. Nature conservation in the municipality focuses on the "Baniska" nature reserve, established in 1924, which is home to ancient specimens of beech, fir, and sycamore trees. Rytro has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages; in 1312, King Władysław Łokietek granted the Poor Clares the right to collect tolls on the Poprad River. Rytro Castle, associated with the figure of Piotr Ryterski, was an important stronghold during the region's heyday, and royal processions passed through the town. Over the centuries, Rytro changed hands, belonging to royal estates and falling under various administrations, including Austrian rule. Notable historical sites include the ruins of the 13th-century castle and the bridge over the Roztoczanka River, linked to the novels of Maria Kownacka, who reflected local realities and adventures associated with the region in her works. The culture of Rytro has also been shaped by literature and traditions tied to local figures, making this municipality a fascinating destination on the map of Poland.
