wikipedia
The Underground Tourist Route "Rzeszów Cellars" is a unique complex of historic town cellars located in Rzeszów, beneath the Old Town Market Square. Managed by the Municipal Housing Administration in Rzeszów, the route stretches 396 meters and connects 40 chambers spread across three levels, at depths ranging from 0.5 to 10 meters. The history of the cellars dates back to the 1980s, though initial preservation work was carried out as early as the 1960s and 1970s by experts from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. The first section of the route was opened to visitors in 2001, and after its expansion, completed in 2007, it became more accessible to tourists. The architecture of the cellars spans from the 14th to the 18th centuries, and among the notable spaces are the Haberdashers' Cellars, Gruba Kochanowicza, and the Tatar Dungeons, which form the narrowest part of the route. The path runs beneath the main slab of the Market Square and adjacent townhouses, featuring fascinating historical and educational exhibits, including replicas of knight armor, weapons, ancient ceramics, and coats of arms of the city's former owners. Open year-round except on Mondays and public holidays, the underground route is ticketed, and visits are conducted in organized groups with a guide. This important cultural site combines elements of architecture, history, and education, offering an intriguing journey into Rzeszów’s past.
