Saint Sophia Specialist Hospital in Warsaw

The Specialist Hospital of St. Sophia in Warsaw, located at 90 Żelazna Street, is an institution with a rich history dating back to 1912, when it was established as the first maternity hospital in Warsaw. From the very beginning, it stood out with modern equipment, such as electrically ventilated operating rooms and incubators for premature babies. During World War II, the hospital underwent numerous transformations, including being converted into a military hospital and later into a prison hospital. After the war, it operated as a ministerial hospital under the Ministry of Public Security, and in 1956, it returned to its obstetric and gynecological functions. Throughout its history, the hospital has been a pioneer in many areas, being the first in Poland to introduce family births and innovations such as the rooming-in system and the presence of the father during cesarean sections. The hospital has also gained the status of a second-level reference center in perinatology, highlighting its high standards of care for the most challenging cases in obstetrics and gynecology. In recent years, the facility has undergone significant modernization, including the construction of a new hospital wing, enhancing its functionality and patient care capacity. In 2012, during its centennial celebrations, the newly built wing was opened, increasing the number of beds and the overall area of the hospital. Culture and art have also left their mark on the hospital's history; in 2012, the premiere of the play "Położnice szpitala św. Zofii" (Maternity Patients of St. Sophia Hospital) took place at the Rozrywka Theater in Chorzów, which critiqued the Polish healthcare system by portraying the hospital as a symbol of its numerous problems. Additionally, the survival rates of premature babies at the hospital are significantly higher than the national average, further underscoring its importance on the medical map of Warsaw and the entire country. The hospital also performs a range of gynecological surgeries using laparoscopy, confirming its innovation and adaptation to modern medical methods.
