wikipedia
The Sapieha Palace in Wieleń is a historic landmark located in Wieleń, within the Greater Poland Voivodeship. Constructed in the Baroque style, it was likely built on the site of a medieval defensive castle. Its construction was initiated by Piotr Sapieha, the Smolensk voivode, who was married to Joanna Sułkowska. The palace's architecture, designed by Karol Marcin Frantz, envisioned a quadrangular residence with an internal courtyard. However, the construction was never completed, and only two wings—the southern and western—were realized, while the northern and eastern wings were dismantled in the 18th century. During the Sapieha family's ownership, a park adorned with stone sculptures was also established. The palace passed into the hands of Friedrich von Blankensee at the end of the 18th century, and from 1855 to 1945, it belonged to the von Schulenberg family. Unfortunately, towards the end of World War II, the building was burned down, though its façade survived in good condition. It is characterized by pilasters, a rusticated base, and a risalit featuring the coat of arms of the von Schulenberg dynasty. The palace complex also includes a gatehouse, an orangery, a gardener's house, and a cemetery with a chapel-mausoleum for the owners. The park, originally rich in native tree species, was destroyed after World War II, with replacement plantings including bird cherry, horse chestnuts, and Douglas firs. This park was once adorned with elegant pergolas and alleys, creating a picturesque setting for the palace. The site is not only a significant part of the region's history but also an attraction for architecture and culture enthusiasts, reflecting the former grandeur of this place.
