wikipedia
Siemiatycze is a town in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, serving as the seat of Siemiatycze County. Located on the Drohiczyn Upland, on the Kamianka River, it has a rich history dating back to the 15th century, when the first settlements were established. The town was granted city rights in 1542, and its history saw dynamic development linked to ethnic and religious diversity, with a dominant Jewish community and significant Catholic and Orthodox influences. In the 19th century, Siemiatycze underwent significant changes, becoming an important commercial and religious center. The architectural value of the town is represented by historic churches, such as the Orthodox church from 1866 and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which combines Baroque and Renaissance elements. Preserved 18th-century structures, including the Missionary Monastery, the bell tower, and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, highlight the town’s historical atmosphere. Unfortunately, World War II caused significant destruction, including the loss of the town hall and many houses. After the war, Siemiatycze lost a large part of its population, including the Jewish community, which had accounted for 60% of its residents before the war. Modern-day Siemiatycze is an industrial center with food, materials, and furniture industries. The town has rich sporting traditions and hosts numerous events. An interesting fact is the presence of two new Orthodox churches, both consecrated by high-ranking church officials. Siemiatycze is also well-connected, with a developed network of national and regional roads, facilitating access to various regions of Poland.
