wikipedia
Nowa Wieś, also known as Neudorf, was once an important source of vegetables and fruit for Wrocław. In the 19th century, following the dissolution of monasteries and the demolition of the city's fortifications, the village began to take on an urban character. In 1868, it was formally incorporated into Wrocław, which had a significant impact on the urban development of the settlement. A key element became Kleinburgerstraße, transformed into the wide Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße avenue, along which representative villas and tenement houses began to be built. During the interwar period, construction workers modified the street by adding tram tracks, and its name was changed to Straße der SA, in honor of the Nazi paramilitary forces during Hitler's rule. The settlement witnessed bloody battles for Festung Breslau in 1945, leading to significant destruction that rendered many buildings unsuitable for reconstruction. After the war, the area remained vacant for a long time, but from the 1960s onward, intensive development began, dividing the land into the Anna, Barbara, Celina, and Dorota housing estates. In the 1970s and 1980s, characteristic residential blocks were constructed, including the well-known "ant colony" (mrówkowiec) and "dachshund" (jamnik) buildings. An important event was the completion of the Poltegor Centre office building in 1982, which was the tallest building in Wrocław until 2007. In the 1990s, modern "gallery-style" buildings appeared, and the vacant land in the center of the settlement was only developed in 2016, contributing to the growth of Wrocław's business center. Today, the Powstańców Śląskich estate, known for its close proximity to other districts, combines a rich history with modern architecture, making it an important landmark on the map of Wrocław. It is worth noting the diversity of architectural forms that reflect the social and cultural changes of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
