wikipedia
Skaryszew is a town in the Masovian Voivodeship, located on the Radom Plain, on the Kobylanka River. The town boasts a long history dating back to at least 1198, when it became the property of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre monastery in Miechów. Skaryszew was a meeting place for Polish dignitaries and traditionally hosted horse fairs, which date back to 1432. The horse market, known as "Wstępy Skaryszewskie," continues to this day, making it one of the oldest and most fascinating events of its kind in Europe. The main landmarks of Skaryszew include the Baroque Church of St. James from the 17th–18th centuries and the Catholic cemetery with a chapel and 19th-century tombstones. It is also worth noting that industry and crafts flourished in Skaryszew, despite numerous destructions caused by fires and wars. World War II brought tragic events, including the establishment of a Jewish ghetto, which was liquidated in August 1942. Despite its difficult history, the town was rebuilt after the war and developed as an agricultural and craft center. Literature holds a significant place in Skaryszew's culture; Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz set the action of his short story "Kościół w Skaryszewie" (The Church in Skaryszew) in the local context. The town is also home to the football club Skaryszewianka, which actively participates in local competitions. Over the centuries, Skaryszew has gained importance, as evidenced by numerous administrative changes and public utility facilities. In 2023, the town had 4,435 inhabitants, and the main transportation routes are National Road 9 and Voivodeship Road 733.
