Skierbieszów

Skierbieszów is a village in the Lublin Voivodeship, in Zamość County, situated in the valley of the Wolica River, serving as the administrative seat of the Gmina Skierbieszów. The locality boasts a rich history and was once a private ecclesiastical town, established in 1510, with town rights from 1496 to 1822. To this day, it is home to the Roman Catholic Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and numerous historical monuments, including a 17th-century Renaissance church, a medieval castle of the Chełm bishops, and remnants of a defensive fortress. The name Skierbieszów derives from the Old Polish word "skierbiesz," meaning "treasurer," reflecting the area's local heritage. The region is characterized by diverse topography and significant natural values, which led to the establishment of the Skierbieszów Landscape Park in 1995. The village also has its cultural traditions, such as an annual fair lasting three days in the first week of July, attracting merchants and tourists. During the PRL era, Skierbieszów became the seat of numerous social institutions and industrial plants, and today its development focuses on the timber industry and agritourism. It is also worth noting that in 2012, an attempt to regain town rights ended in failure. The residents of Skierbieszów live in harmony with their rich history, cultivating local traditions and engaging in various cultural and social initiatives. With its beautiful monuments, picturesque landscapes, and historical heritage, Skierbieszów is an interesting point on the map of Poland, combining architectural merits with living history and culture.
