Snowy Ponds

Śnieżne Stawki is a complex of eight endorheic (non-draining) ponds, including six seasonal ones, located in the glacial cirque of Śnieżne Kotły in the western part of the Karkonosze Mountains, within the Karkonosze National Park. These picturesque water bodies are surrounded by moraines and are characterized by variable depths, which can reach up to 1.5 meters during the annual cycle. The surrounding aquatic environment provides favorable conditions for the reproduction of the alpine newt, making this area significant for local wildlife. The Karkonosze, as part of the Western Sudetes, boast a rich cultural and historical heritage, with numerous legends and traditions associated with their natural attractions, and Śnieżne Stawki form an intriguing part of this landscape. The region is popular among tourists, especially mountain hikers and nature enthusiasts, thanks to its spectacular views and the unique character of the ponds. This area is also protected as a national park, underscoring its importance for biodiversity conservation.
