wikipedia
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Polkowice is a Roman Catholic temple whose history dates back to the 14th century, with the first mentions recorded in 1366 and 1376. Initially, it was a wooden structure, and the present Gothic, single-nave brick and stone building was completed in 1679. In the 19th century, the church underwent significant reconstructions, and numerous post-war renovations were carried out to restore and preserve it. A distinctive architectural element is the tower, completed in 1690, adorned with a weather vane depicting the figure of St. Michael. In 1768, the roof was replaced with tiles, and in the 20th century, many interior renovations were carried out, including the restoration of 17th-century polychrome paintings depicting eight saints. The church is characterized by a neo-Gothic main altar decorated with sculptures of angels and evangelists, and its furnishings also include a neo-Gothic side altar, a baptismal font, and a pulpit with figures of saints. In a cultural context, the surroundings of the church also feature a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, and a historical cross and chapel, relocated from the cemetery, are associated with local legends of penance, although their actual origins remain unproven and based on hypotheses. The church played a significant role during the plague epidemic of 1680, when an altar in honor of St. Sebastian was funded. After World War II, the church was in poor technical condition, exacerbated by mining shocks. Changes affected not only the roof but also the interior. In recent years, new stained-glass windows and mechanical organs have been installed, replacing the destroyed instrument and offering modern sound within the beautiful, historic interior. The church is now not only a place of worship but also a tourist attraction, bearing witness to the rich local history, preserved architecture, and associated legends. Ongoing conservation works ensure the longevity of this vital part of Polkowice's cultural heritage.
