Polkowice

The Polkowice Commune, with its seat in the village of Polkowice, was established after World War II as part of the Recovered Territories in Lower Silesia. It was created on June 28, 1946, as an administrative unit of the Głogów County, and in 1950 it became part of the newly formed Zielona Góra Voivodeship. In 1952, the commune consisted of 14 village councils (gromadas), and as a result of the administrative reform in 1954, the commune was abolished. Polkowice gained town rights on January 1, 1967, and the commune was reactivated on January 1, 1973, within the Lubin County. From 1973 to 1998, the commune was part of the Legnica Voivodeship, and since 1999 it has been a part of the Polkowice County in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Polkowice is a town with a historical heritage and rich culture. The commune's demographics show a steady population growth, increasing from 26,002 in 2004 to 27,715 in 2020. The commune covers an area of 158.77 km², a significant portion of which is occupied by agricultural and forest land. Neighboring communes include Chocianów, Grębocice, Jerzmanowa, Lubin, Radwanice, Rudna, and Przemków. The commune also encompasses numerous localities, including both towns and villages, as well as settlements. Land use indicates the important role of agriculture and forestry in the local economy.
