Stadion Polonii Warszawa

The General Kazimierz Sosnkowski Polonia Warsaw Stadium, located in the New Town district at Konwiktorska Street, is a sports facility used by the Polonia Warsaw club. The stadium was built between 1926 and 1928 in response to the club's need for a dedicated venue, as it had previously played at Agrykola. Initially, plans called for a large arena with a capacity of 20,000, but due to financial constraints, a provisional facility with wooden stands was constructed, eventually accommodating 10,000 spectators. The stadium's historical significance is underscored by its use by the German police during World War II and the dramatic combat that took place there during the Warsaw Uprising. After the war, the stadium underwent a series of renovations and in 2010 hosted the Polish national team in a friendly match. In 2018, the Warsaw City Council allocated funds for its expansion, which is expected to increase its capacity to 15,500 spectators and include the construction of a new sports hall. The stadium consists of two main stands: the fully covered "Main Stand," popular among families, and the "Kamienna" (Stone Stand), known for the endurance of its passionate fans. Interestingly, the "Kamienna" was modernized in 2004 and has a capacity of 1,911 seats, a nod to the club's founding year. The stadium's architecture, including the clubhouse built in 1954, has been described as an example of socialist realism. The Polonia Stadium is a significant part of both Warsaw's sports history and the local community, serving as a venue for numerous cultural and sporting events.
