The Stone Babas of Bartoszyce, also known as Bartki, are two ancient stone figures that are the oldest monuments in Bartoszyce. They belong to the group of so-called Prussian baba statues and are registered as archaeological monuments in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The statues, Bartel and Gustebalda, made of granite, are about 150 cm tall and are placed on a square at the intersection of Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Bohaterów Warszawy Streets. Bartel, the taller of the two statues, has distinct facial features and holds a horn in his right hand, while Gustebalda has less distinct features and an inscription carved on her body. The origin and function of these figures are unclear, but most researchers point to their Prussian roots, suggesting that they may have been the creative work of Prussian tribes. Although there is no confirmation in inscriptions, studies suggest that their carving required great precision and labor using simple tools. There are many hypotheses about their purpose – some link them to pagan rituals, others to local heroes or knights. The history of the babas is well documented; for centuries, Bartel was located in the Church of St. John the Baptist, and Gustebalda was moved to various locations in the city. In 1902, both figures were placed on the present square, where they remain to this day. The stone babas are a testament to the culture and history of the region, and their mysterious origin and purpose arouse the interest of both local residents and tourists. They were entered into the register of monuments on November 25, 1948.
