wikipedia
Potok is a village in Poland, located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, within Krosno County, in the administrative district of Gmina Jedlicze. The village currently has approximately 1,800 inhabitants and boasts a rich history dating back to at least the 14th century. In the 16th century, Potok was home to notable noble families such as the Giebultowskis and the Mniszechs, as well as a Jewish community that played a significant role in local culture. The village was well-developed, featuring a manor house, a farmstead, an inn, and various craft workshops. Architectural attractions include the People's House (Dom Ludowy) and a school complex. The historical development of the village was closely tied to the oil industry, which began here in the 19th century; it was in Potok that crude oil was extracted, contributing to economic growth. The area also features mineral springs, brines, and sulphurous waters, known for centuries. The village witnessed numerous historical events, including military invasions, such as the tragic invasion by Rákóczi's forces in 1657. Potok hosted celebrations and the wedding of Marina Mniszech, the last wife of Tsar Dmitry the Impostor, and was home to notable figures such as Jan Hempel, a general of the Polish Army, and Florentyna Madejewska, a courier for the Home Army (Armia Krajowa). During World War I, a battle took place here, with casualties buried in a nearby cemetery. After World War II, Potok underwent significant reconstruction, becoming a village with new houses and housing estates. Interestingly, Potok is not only a place with a rich history but also a settlement with cultural traditions, where traces of bygone eras have been preserved, making it an intriguing point on the map of the Podkarpacie region.
