Synagogue in Czyżew

The synagogue in Czyżew is a historic building dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, located in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. It was most likely built on the site of an earlier wooden prayer house. Its architecture features an unplastered, brick structure with a rectangular layout, characterized by the distinctive red brick used for the facade. The interior of the synagogue is marked by an elongated spatial arrangement, with the western section slightly elevated compared to the eastern part, where the prayer hall is located under a separate roof. A noteworthy decorative element on the eastern elevation, crafted in brick and resembling the Tablets of Moses, highlights the cultural significance of this structure. Unfortunately, due to a change in its function, the synagogue was repurposed as a warehouse, which has negatively impacted its technical condition, leaving it in a poor state today. The synagogue in Czyżew stands as a testament to the rich history of the Jewish community in this region, and its architecture and decorative elements form a valuable part of the cultural heritage.
