wikipedia
The synagogue in Szydłów, located at 3 Targowa Street, is the oldest preserved synagogue in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship and one of the oldest of its kind in Poland. Built between 1534 and 1564, it is a valuable example of defensive synagogue architecture, reflecting the military obligations of Polish Jews. The structure was erected in the late Gothic style with elements of late Renaissance, featuring walls approximately 2 meters thick, supported by buttresses and a characteristic sunken roof. The interior of the synagogue, adorned with late Renaissance stucco decorations, contains precious fragments of frescoes. The Aron ha-kodesh (Holy Ark), dating back to the early 17th century, is decorated with plant motifs and the Tree of Life. Also noteworthy are the original sconces discovered during renovations in 1981. Throughout its history, the synagogue underwent numerous reconstructions and suffered significant damage, including devastation by the Nazis during World War II. After the war, the building was repurposed for cultural use and, in 1967, it was designated as the Municipal Cultural Center. A comprehensive renovation in 1978 restored the synagogue's original appearance. Today, the synagogue houses a museum of Judaica, featuring valuable exhibits such as fragments of Torah scrolls, a Torah crown, and the sculpture "Moses" by Gustaw Zemła. It also serves as a venue for sculpture and painting exhibitions, making it an important cultural hub in the region. The synagogue is listed in the national register of historical monuments, underscoring its historical and architectural significance.
