The town boasts a rich history dating back to the beginnings of Neolithic settlement and a medieval stronghold, with its town rights granted in 1352. Szczebrzeszyn was a multicultural place where Catholic, Jewish, and other religious communities coexisted, as reflected in its preserved monuments such as the Baroque Church of St. Catherine, a 15th-century Orthodox church, a synagogue, and one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Poland – the kirkut. Also noteworthy is the unique monument of a cricket, related to the popular poem by Jan Brzechwa, which attracts tourists. In 2015, Szczebrzeszyn became the host of the Festival of the Capital of the Polish Language, drawing literature enthusiasts. Architecturally, the town is characterized by its preserved urban layout and interesting buildings, including a Franciscan monastery complex, a Greek Catholic church, and a synagogue. The ruins of a 14th-century castle, associated with Dymitr of Goraj, also continue to attract attention. Demographically, according to 2019 data, Szczebrzeszyn had 4,964 inhabitants. The town underwent numerous administrative changes and belonged to the Zamość Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998. Local legends and anecdotes, such as the tale of the beetle, add to its charm and attract tourists.
