wikipedia
Targówek is a district of Warsaw located on the right bank of the Vistula River, divided into residential areas (Bródno, Targówek Mieszkaniowy, Zacisze) and industrial zones (Targówek Fabryczny). Approximately 30% of its area is covered by green spaces, including Lasek Bródnowski, Park Bródnowski, and Park im. Stefana Wiecheckiego "Wiecha," highlighting the importance of nature in this area. Targówek borders Praga-Północ, Białołęka, Rembertów, and the towns of Ząbki and Marki. In historical terms, the area was inhabited as early as the 9th/10th century, when a fortified settlement existed in Stare Bródno. Targówek was first recorded in the 15th century, and its name appeared in 1740 thanks to Marshal Lubomirski. A significant milestone in the district's history was the incorporation of Targówek and Bródno into Warsaw in 1916. Targówek is home to many interesting landmarks. At the Bródno Cemetery, consecrated in 1884, rest numerous notable residents, such as Michał Walemberger, and important figures like Abraham Stern, the creator of the first arithmometer. Additionally, the Jewish cemetery from 1780 stands as a testament to the local Jewish culture, although it was destroyed during World War II. The district also features a 19th-century wooden church of St. Vincent à Paulo and the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. It is also worth mentioning the Forts of the Warsaw Fortress and the remains of an early Piast fortified settlement in the Bródnowski Forest. Targówek also boasts a rich cultural life, with the Rampa Theater serving as an important part of the local arts scene. In recent years, the district has gained prominence thanks to the opening of new metro stations, improving connectivity to the city center. In 1994, the Municipality of Warsaw-Targówek was established, which transformed into a district of Warsaw in 2002. The long history of Targówek, combined with its modern development, makes it an intriguing area for both residents and visitors.
