wikipedia
The Church of St. Philip and St. James in Sękowa is a wooden filial church dating back to the early 16th century, regarded as a gem of the Low Beskids and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It features a Gothic architectural style, with a single-nave structure and a three-sided enclosed chancel, built on a stone foundation. The walls of the church are made of hand-hewn larch logs, and the entire structure is covered with wooden shingles. In the 17th century, a tower with a post-and-frame structure and a false garret was added, along with a pyramidal spire, giving the building its unique character. The interior of the church, severely damaged during military operations in 1914–1915, was restored in 1918 and again in the second half of the 20th century. Notable features include the late Renaissance main altar from the 17th century, a stone baptismal font from 1522, and fragments of 19th-century polychrome paintings. Beyond its architectural value, the church attracted artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Stanisław Wyspiański and Teodor Axentowicz, adding to its significant cultural importance. In 1994, it received the Europa Nostra Medal for conservation, and its UNESCO inscription in 2003 highlights its exceptional aesthetic and landscape values. The church is also part of the Wooden Architecture Trail in Lesser Poland, further emphasizing its importance to Polish cultural heritage.
