The theatre in Legnica boasts a rich history dating back to 1933, when a permanent multi-department theatre was established, managed by an intendant. From 1938 to 1943, this role was held by Richard Rückert. During this period, the theatre's repertoire included farces and operettas, as well as serious dramas and operas, including works by Wagner. The programme featured pieces by Nazi supporters, German classics, and contemporary playwrights. The theatre's activities were interrupted in September 1944 when most of the actors were conscripted into the military. The Helena Modrzejewska Theatre, housed in a building that was originally a mid-19th century theatre-opera, was entered into the register of historical monuments in 1991. Since 1977, the theatre—previously known as the Dramatic Theatre and later as the Centre for the Arts–Dramatic Theatre—has operated under the name of Helena Modrzejewska and has gained recognition on the national theatre scene by participating in numerous festivals and reviews. The theatre is known for its unique mission of presenting "true stories in real places," which strengthens local identity. Historical events associated with the theatre include its opening in 1842, which took place in a new building designed by Carl Ferdinand Langhans the Younger and was accompanied by numerous incidents due to the great public interest in the performances. After World War II, the theatre was looted by Soviet Red Army soldiers and then remained under their exclusive use for 20 years. Between 1964 and 1977, after the theatre was handed over to Polish authorities, its neoclassical character was destroyed. However, during its reopening in 1977, the building was quickly renovated, which did not obscure its historical significance. The theatre organised the International Theatre Festival "City" and co-organised the Not-Bad Theatre Festival, making it an important landmark on Poland's cultural map. Renowned directors have worked on its stage, and the ensemble has won prestigious awards, confirming the high artistic quality of the performances. In 2017, the Modrzejewska Theatre was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture "Gloria Artis," further evidence of its importance in Polish culture.
