wikipedia
The Princely Pheasantry (Książęca Bażantarnia) is a late Neoclassical building constructed between 1792 and 1800, located in Poręba, within the municipality of Pszczyna. It was commissioned by Prince Frederick Erdmann of Pszczyna and built according to a design by Carl Gotthard Langhans under the supervision of architect Wilhelm Pusch. The Pheasantry was originally conceived as a breeding ground for pheasants, with the idea for its establishment dating back to 1770, which required extensive land reclamation efforts. When the main residence of the Anhalt-Köthen princes, who had taken over Pszczyna, was damaged by a fire, it was subsequently rebuilt. The Pheasantry was then repurposed to serve as a venue for leisure and entertainment, in contrast to the formal interiors of the castle. Architecturally, the Pheasantry is characterized by its Neoclassical style: a rectangular layout, a high-pitched roof, a front façade featuring a portico and arched windows. The interiors, preserved from the 19th century, reflect the luxurious social life of the era, including elegant entertainment rooms and a ballroom where lavish parties and events were held—such as the luxurious birthday celebrations of Princess Augustyna. The Pheasantry was also surrounded by grounds designed for sports, making it a popular destination for weekend excursions. After World War I, the building gained a new function as an elegant inn, hosting notable figures, including President Ignacy Mościcki. Following World War II, the structure lost much of its former grandeur, but in 1965, it was listed in the register of historical monuments. Over the years, it changed owners and functions multiple times. After a conservation-led renovation in 2011, it was adapted to modern needs while preserving many historical elements. Today, the Pheasantry serves as a tourist attraction, offering ballrooms and conference facilities, while its picturesque park surroundings attract walkers and cyclists.
