The Provincial Police Headquarters building in Wrocław

The Provincial Police Headquarters building in Wrocław, located at 31-33 Podwale Street, is an example of 1920s architecture designed by Rudolf Fernholz in collaboration with Malwitz. Construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1928, with the official opening taking place on January 11, 1929. The structure consists of two front buildings and four parallel arched wings, creating five internal courtyards. The building stands out with its richly decorated main facade featuring a portico supported by pillars adorned with sculptures by Felix Kupsch. The interiors, especially the hall and meeting room, are designed in the Art Deco style, with ceramic cladding and ebony paneling, reflecting a high aesthetic and representative standard. For practical reasons, the building was equipped with modern amenities for its time, such as central heating, elevators, and two telephone networks. The history of the building dates back to 1809, when the first Police Presidency headquarters was established on Biskupia Street, and later on Szewska Street. Due to the growing number of employees, it was decided to construct a new facility on the purchased site of the former Eichborn garden. The building's design went through various conceptual stages before the current form was finally approved, and the architectural challenges related to the foundation posed a significant structural difficulty. An interesting fact is that the building survived the war and continues to serve the same function as it did before World War II, remaining an important landmark in Wrocław's architectural and historical landscape.
