Three Crowns

Three Crowns is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Pieniny Mountains, captivating visitors since the 19th century. The mountain rises approximately 530 meters above the Dunajec River and consists of five peaks, the highest of which, Okrąglica, reaches 982 meters. From the viewing platform on Okrąglica, a breathtaking panorama unfolds, showcasing the Dunajec River Gorge, the Tatra Mountains, and the majestic ranges of the Beskids and Gorce. The Three Crowns massif attracts particular attention due to its unique topography and rich flora, including rare plant species whose habitats are protected within the Pieniny National Park. Historically, Three Crowns was known as Pieniny, adopting its current name in 1860. A significant milestone in its history was the marking of the first tourist trail to the summit in 1906, followed by the Polish government’s purchase of the area in 1929. The PTTK "Three Crowns" hostel located in Sromowce Niżne stands as a testament to a long-standing tourist tradition, which grew from around 200–300 visitors per year in 1880 to over 60,000 by 2005. Local legends tell of the mountain serving as a refuge during Tatar invasions and mention historical figures associated with the area. Multiple hiking trails lead to Three Crowns, catering to both trekking enthusiasts and those seeking stunning vistas. Night hikes to witness sunrise are especially popular during the summer season. Architecturally, the site features a viewing platform adorned with railings, accommodating up to 30 people. Three Crowns has also gained recognition as a filming location, appearing in modern productions, which underscores its cultural significance. The surrounding landscape is complemented by picturesque meadows rich in diverse vegetation, including rare limestone-loving rock plants. Three Crowns is not only a tourist attraction but also a place steeped in history and home to a unique ecosystem, making it one of the most treasured gems on the tourist map of the Polish Pieniny.
