TR Warszawa, formerly known as Teatr Rozmaitości, is a municipal theater located in Warsaw at 8 Marszałkowska Street. Its history dates back to 1949, when it initially operated as the State Theater of Varieties. The theater is housed in the basement of a tenement building designed by Maksymilian Goldberg and Hipolit Rutkowski between 1936 and 1937, which was intended to serve as a shelter in the event of war. During World War II, the theater was transformed into the Deutsches Theater, where operettas were staged for German military personnel. After the war, in 1945, the theater became a cultural hub, hosting diverse projects and driving social change, including a literary cabaret in the 1970s and ambitious stage productions in the 1980s. Following a fire in 1988, the theater went through a difficult period but resumed operations in 1994, transforming into an avant-garde institution that attracted young audiences. Grzegorz Jarzyna, who became artistic director in 1998, introduced modern aesthetics and themes, resulting in the success of plays such as "Tropical Madness." TR Warszawa has become a platform for experimental artistic endeavors, exploring new and controversial topics related to the body, sexuality, and culture. Interestingly, the theater changed its name to TR Warszawa in 2003 to emphasize its connection with the city. In recent years, the theater has engaged in international collaborations, organizing theatrical projects in unconventional spaces and creating new dramaturgies, establishing itself as a dynamic cultural center. In 2020, TR Warszawa plans to move to a new location at Defilad Square, which will undoubtedly enrich its artistic activities.
