Veolia Energia Poznań SA, previously known as Dalkia Poznań, is a key player in the energy industry in Poznań. It was established in 2004 through the privatization of the Poznań Combined Heat and Power Plant Complex. This process stemmed from the transformation of a state-owned company, whose origins can be traced back to 1975. The construction of the first heat and power plant, Garbary EC-I, began in 1927 and was built on thousands of piles, utilizing large quantities of steel and cement, reflecting the ambitious architectural projects of that era. The facility operated for many years, contributing to the development of Poznań's district heating network, and its modernizations led to an increase in production capacity to 65 MW by 1952. Over time, due to changing needs and progressive development, a decision was made to build EC-II Karolin, which was commissioned in 1985. The heat and power plant converts energy from fuels such as coal and biomass, aligning with the philosophy of sustainable development. In 2019, EC-I Garbary was sold to a developer, confirming the city's transition into a new phase, where residential buildings are planned. A notable structure is the 200-meter-high chimney of EC-II, which is the tallest building in Poznań, visible from afar thanks to its warning lights and also hosting radio stations. Dalkia's innovative approach to cogeneration, i.e., the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, allows for more efficient use of fuels and a reduction in pollutant emissions. By switching to biomass, the company contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and has become a leader in the use of renewable energy sources in the country. An interesting fact is that 80% of the biomass used consists of wood waste, confirming a sustainable energy production model while simultaneously protecting the environment.
