War Cemetery No. 45 in Lipna is a historic World War I cemetery designed by Dušan Jurkovič, located in the former village of Lipna, which now belongs to the village of Czarne in Gorlice County, within the municipality of Sękowa. The cemetery is situated on a forested slope above the traditional parish cemetery, laid out on a rectangular plan and enclosed on three sides by wooden picket fences, giving it a picturesque character. To the north, a low stone wall supports the central monument—a tall wooden cross with a circular plaque inscribed with the words "War destroys—war builds," mounted on a stone mound. The cemetery was renovated in 1998, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.
It contains 22 individual graves and 3 mass graves, where 153 soldiers are buried—54 from the Austro-Hungarian Army, mostly Czechs and Slovaks, and 99 Russians, who fell in January and March 1915. To date, only 22 Austro-Hungarian soldiers have been identified. The cemetery is part of the Nowy Żmigród I Cemetery District and is one of over 400 Western Galician war cemeteries established by the War Graves Department of the Imperial and Royal Military Command in Krakow.
The architecture and surroundings of the cemetery blend seamlessly into the local landscape, creating a unique site that commemorates the tragic events of World War I. It serves not only as a place of remembrance but also as an attractive tourist destination for those interested in the history of the region and its wartime heritage.
