The Las Warmiński Nature Reserve named after Prof. Benon Polakowski, established in 1982 in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, aims to protect forest areas of natural character and aquatic ecosystems, including the Łyna River and lakes. The reserve covers an area of 1,819.72 hectares and features a moraine landscape with wetland depressions. The flora of the reserve is rich, including old-growth pine and oak forests, as well as protected plants such as wild garlic and lily of the valley. The reserve serves as a habitat for numerous species of fungi, lichens, and animals, including rare birds such as the white-tailed eagle and the lesser spotted eagle. The history of this area dates back to the Stone Age, when hunters settled there. Over the centuries, these lands attracted various cultures, including Prussian, Germanic, and Slavic tribes, which influenced their development and transformations. Medieval German settlement and the activities of the Teutonic Order led to significant landscape changes, including deforestation. In the 20th century, depopulation processes occurred, and reforestation and renaturalization programs were implemented in the forests. An interesting feature is the commemorative stone from 2013, honoring Prof. Polakowski, and numerous archaeological monuments that remind us of the area's rich history. In addition to its protective function, the reserve also serves educational and tourist purposes, attracting nature enthusiasts and researchers interested in the natural heritage of the region.
