Warsaw Gasworks

The Warsaw Gasworks, also known as the Wola Gasworks, is a historic gas production plant located at 25 Kasprzaka Street in the Wola district of Warsaw. Its history dates back to 1856, when the Gas Committee signed a contract with a German company to build the first gasworks at Ludna Street in Powiśle. Between 1886 and 1888, a larger gasworks was constructed at Dworska Street (now Kasprzaka), and in 1892, a tar distillation plant was launched there. In 1925, the plant was taken over by the city, leading to the establishment of the municipal company Gazownia Miejska m.st. Warszawy. In 1970, coal gas production was discontinued, and since 1978, Warsaw residents have been using natural gas. The gasworks complex, which includes numerous production buildings, a water tower, and gas storage tanks, is managed by the Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG). It is worth mentioning that the former gas apparatus and compression building now houses the Warsaw Gasworks Museum, opened in 1977 to mark the 120th anniversary of the plant. After modernization, the museum reopened on October 13, 2022, offering visitors insights into the history of gasworks in Warsaw and the industrial architecture of the site. Architecturally, the gasworks complex combines industrial features with local heritage, and its interesting elements, such as compressors and the water tower, bear witness to past technologies. The Warsaw Gasworks not only contributed to the development of urban infrastructure but has also become an important point on Warsaw's cultural map, symbolizing the need for innovation in energy supply.
